Gateway to French Mélodies for High and Low Voices Released by Alfred Music Publishing

LOS ANGELES, CA  -  Thursday, May 10, 2012
Alfred Music Publishing, the official print music publisher of thousands of popular artists, songwriters, and composers, releases Gateway to French Mélodies, a vocal anthology of French song and inspiration, arranged for both high and low voices.

Perfect for vocal students, the songs in Gateway to French Mélodies evoke a fragrant garden of poetry and music that is both passionate and refined. Each song brings to life one of the great themes of French art—love, nature, and the purpose of life—with sensuous beauty, beguiling grace, and often with humor. Many of the marvelous songs in the collection have been out of print for more than a century, and a few are published for the very first time. Piano accompaniments are heard on the companion CD, beautifully played by Joan Thompson and expertly engineered by Grammy® Award-winner Matthew Snyder.

The songs include “Plaisir d’amour,” the quintessential song of bittersweet love, edited from the composer’s original 1784 edition; seven works by women composers, including two sisters who were divas of Romantic opera, Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot; works of French operatic masters such as Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Bizet, and Massenet; six songs by Gabriel Fauré and four by Claude Debussy; and two duets from contrasting historical periods.

The basic concept of the Gateway series is to give students an understanding of what they sing. Each lyric is translated, both word-by-word and in readable English. The singer can learn the song with confidence, as obscure points of phonetics, grammar and interpretation are made clear. The cultural context of each song is illuminated, along with its place in the life and works of the composer. Other collections in the series include Gateway to German Lieder, Gateway to Italian Songs and Arias, Gateway to Italian Diction, and Gateway to German Diction.

Gateway to French Mélodies Book & CD sets for high and low voices are now available for $44.99 each at music retail stores and at Books and CDs are also available separately.
