Alfred Music Publishing, the leader in educational music publishing since 1922, is proud to release Jazzy Fairy Tales, a resource guide for introducing jazz music to young children.
Jazzy Fairy Tales provides educators with a charming new way to bring jazz music into the classroom with the music stories of “The Three Jazzy Little Pigs,” “The Three Jazzy Goats,” and “The Three Jazzy Bears.” The book can be used as either a supplement to an existing program or as a readymade, all-encompassing music curriculum, and is adaptable for different student populations, learning abilities, and space situations.
This powerful teaching tool is a culmination of five years of development incorporating simple jazz basics such as scat singing and rhythmic patterns, joined with classic storytelling and body movement. Classroom teacher and storyteller Susan Milligan and jazz singer and music teacher Louise Rogers created the resource from their work with young children at The Medical Center Nursery School in New York City.
“When you mix storytelling with music, you create a powerful teaching tool for young children,” said Karen Surmani, Alfred’s Managing Childhood Education Editor. “It helps develop a child’s imagination and creative skills early on, but more importantly it gets them excited about learning.”
The book includes a user-friendly Appendix, requiring no musical knowledge, which provides music terms, jazz terminology, standard blues form, and notation (melody with chords) for most of the themes and songs. In addition, the accompanying audio CD, beautifully recorded by jazz bassist Rick Strong and vocalist Louise Rogers, contains demonstrations/sing-alongs for each song in the book, segmented into separate tracks for easy rehearsal and reference.
As part of Alfred’s ongoing commitment to improving our environment, this book is printed on 100% recycled paper stock.
Jazzy Fairy Tales Jazzy Fairy Tales resource guide and CD (00-36596) is now available for $29.99 at music retail stores and on alfred.com.
