Alfred Music Publishing, the world’s largest educational music print publisher, was honored at the 2010 Music Publishers’ Association annual meeting as two titles received the coveted Paul Revere Award on June 4, 2010.
The Paul Revere Awards are bestowed in recognition of outstanding examples of overall music publishing. This award acknowledges publishers for their efforts in all aspects of the publishing process, which includes notesetting, printing and materials in printing, art and typography, and overall use and practicality. These winning publications are available for display at libraries, schools, and other institutions across the nation. Among this year’s recipients are Time Out: The Dave Brubeck Quartet and The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Deluxe Songbook.
Time Out: The Dave Brubeck Quartet received 1st place within the “Folio (Standard)” category. The Dave Brubeck Quartet’s 1959 album Time Out changed the sound of jazz and American music. Brubeck’s experimentation with meter, harmony and even Turkish rhythms eventually earned him the cover of Time Magazine; the first jazz musician to achieve such a feat. This piano folio celebrates the album’s 50th anniversary with full-color artwork from the original record, and a 10-page write-up from jazz historian, Ted Gioia. All seven compositions from the monumental recording—transcribed for piano—are featured in this collectable folio which is available for $16.99.
Accepting the 3rd place within the “Folio (Popular)” category, The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Deluxe Songbook features all of the classic songs by E.Y. Harburg and Harold Arlen. Utilizing rare M-G-M studio manuscripts and the original motion picture soundtrack, each song is presented in its original key. As a bonus, this unique collector's item includes two songs from the 1903 Broadway musical production of The Wizard of Oz, with lyrics by original Oz author L. Frank Baum, which have not been published in over a century. The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Deluxe Songbook is now available for $19.95.
