CLINIC: 4-Way Coordination & the 2-in-1Drummer This clinic will outline first the fundamental concepts and innovations behind Marvin Dahlgren & Elliot Fine's classic method book, 4-Way Coordination (which celebrates its 50th year in publication in 2013), with an emphasis on how to apply one’s own imagination to its studies to achieve maximum results. This idea will next be underscored by demonstrating how the book helped influence Cuban drumming legend Walfredo Reyes Sr. to create a new direction in drumming, in the 1950s, by becoming the first drummer to combine playing full drumset with congas and percussion simultaneously. This approach is the subject of a new method book by Walfredo Reyes, Sr. and Elliot Fine, The 2-in-1 Drummer, to be released by Alfred Music in early 2013. The session will be a joint presentation by Cuban drumming pioneer and legend, Walfredo Reyes, Sr., and noted drummer David Stanoch (author of the award-winning method book, Mastering the Tables of Time, who is also a former student of Dahlgren and Fine).

MASTERCLASS: Big Band Drumming At First Sight - Strategies to Help Lead as You Read! Big Band Drumming at First Sight is a session intended to help students develop big band drumset sight-reading skills. During the masterclass, student volunteers will have the opportunity to sightread a variety of big band phrases extracted from arrangements from my new book. We will use drum set parts with pencil markings to help illustrate how a student can read less and listen more when playing with a band.

WORKSHOP: A Beat A Week Glenn Kotche will demonstrate examples of his beats that appear on recordings with Wilco and other projects. These examples are illustrated in his new book A Beat A Week that examines one beat for each week of a year. Glenn will explain the genesis and evolution of each beat as well as the inspiration behind them. Volunteers from the audience will get a chance to play through the various evolving skeletal examples of the beats leading up to the final beat as well. Through these examples, Glenn will share how past experiences in orchestral percussion, marching percussion, big band, ethnic percussion, etc., have shaped who he is as a drumset artist today. Drummers will see how broad percussive education can be a great asset for developing players no matter what their focus might be and how this can lead to developing a unique, individual sound – crucial to having a successful career in music.

CLINIC/PERFORMANCE: The Century Project: Understanding 100 Years of Drum Evolution for Greater Creativity and Employability The goal of this clinic is to offer contemporary drummers a “big picture” understanding of their instrument, and show them a variety of ways to improve their playing today through a deeper understanding of where they came from. Daniel will demonstrate a variety of contemporary grooves, discuss their origins, and show how many of the evolutionary subtleties involved can be applied in new and creative ways. He will also show how an understanding of the roots of these grooves can make today’s player more competitive in a professional environment. In addition to groove demonstration and analysis, Daniel will perform along with various tracks and conclude with a short solo.
