As a violinist, violist, and conductor, Susan C. Brown has performed in the San Francisco Bay area, New York, and in Germany. She is presently the director of strings at Cabrillo College, Aptos, California and has served as director of chamber ensembles at University of California at Santa Cruz and the City University of New York.
As an accomplished composer and arranger she is a multiple recipient of the A.S.C.A.P. (American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers) award for her compositions for strings. Her book, String Players’ Guide to the Orchestra (2008) for string orchestras or individual study through Alfred Music is used in schools and studios nationwide. Her scale method books, Two Octave Scales and Bowings for the Violin, Viola,
Cello, Bass and Strings Score through Tempo Press are standard repertoire in music programs throughout the country and listed with the A.S.T.A. (American String Teachers Association) Certificate Program for Strings. One of Brown’s pieces, The Ghost of John, is featured in the GIA publication, Teaching Music through Performance in Orchestra I. She is also a contributor to the second book by GIA.
Brown has conducted many workshops on string pedagogy and performance throughout the country. Her presentations have included orchestral excerpts for strings, American music, and scales and bowing techniques. Recent clinics have been presented at the National ASTA Conferences, conducting a workshop with the winner of the National Orchestra Competition, and at Colorado State University’s Summer Master’s in Music Program.
Susan C. Brown appears as concertmaster and soloist on the New Albion, Helicon, Mode and Verve recording labels with music by Lou Harrison, Germaine Tailleferre, Roy Hargrove, Henry Cowell and others. While in New York, Brown received her B.M. degree from Ithaca College and an MFA degree from Sarah Lawrence College as a student of Dorothy DeLay. In New York City, was a member of the New York Pro Arte and the Philadelphia Composers Forum. She is currently a member and co-founder of the San Francisco Bay area Picasso Ensemble (www.picassoensemble.org),
Director of The Monterey Jazz Festival Chamber Orchestra, and performer with Ensemble Monterey and The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.
