Stephan Carlson was raised by a father who expressed his love of music in Beatles tribute bands, and a mother who served as a member of the Rockford, IL Bagpipe Orchestra. During his years in secondary school, he began to engage music in singing with choirs. During his undergraduate studies, his varied interests in counterpoint, barbershop, symphonic works, new music, German lied, modern art-songs, a cappella, contemporary choral music and others led him to pursue a B.M. in Composition and Theory.

During his time at Elmhurst College, Stephan was blessed with performances of several of his works by major ensembles at Elmhurst College, and was pursued by his peers for music for their Junior or Senior Recitals.
