Alfred Author-Len Orcino

Len Orcino holds a BS and MA in music education from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and has taken additional graduate courses in jazz education at North Texas State University. He studied tuba with Chester Roberts and Ron Bishop, and studied jazz composition and arranging with Phil Rizzo and Bob Curnow.

Mr. Orcino has 35 years of teaching experience in Ohio District VII including Catholic elementary schools in Lake County, six years at Lake Catholic High School, six years at Lakeland Community College and the last 21 years at Chardon Middle School where he was also music department chair for the school district. He retired in 2003 and is currently teaching part time in the area.

As a composer he has over 60 published concert and jazz band originals. He has composed or arranged music for all the groups he has taught or with which he has performed, and He keeps an active schedule with commissions, conducting and clinics.

Although now semi-retired from playing, he has performed in the greater Cleveland Ohio area as a jazz pianist/organist since the 1960s. His last prominent gig was at Sammy's in the Flats with Hank Geer's Jazz Alive. Other long-term engagements include stints with his own trio, guitarist John Stebal and tenor man Tony Big T Lovano. His big band experience includes Denny Reynold's Jazz Revival Orchestra and Hank Geer’s Big Jazz Band and sax sextet. He was music director for the North Coast Jazz Orchestra, which developed into the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. He directed Lakeland's Jazz Impact from 1975 to 1986 and the Lakeland Jazz Ensemble in 1987-8. His Jazz Impact groups played the Lakeland Jazz Festival with the guest artists from 1975 to 1986, and he currently plays euphonium with the Lakeland Civic Band and a member of the Little Mountain Brass Choir.

Mr. Orcino is a member of the American Society of Composers and Authors (A.S.C.A.P); the American Federation of Musicians (A.F.of M.); Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA); Music Educators National Conference (MENC); and is listed in Who's Who in America.
