David Birrow is a percussionist and teacher. He teaches in the Individual Instruction, Community Partnership and Group instruction departments at the MacPhail Center for Music. A licensed educator, David has experience teaching K-12 general music in both public and private schools as well as individual percussion lessons and group percussion instruction. David also teaches percussion and electronic music at Breck School in Golden Valley.
A versatile performer, his interests range from orchestral to world music to jazz to new music. He has performed throughout Europe and South America with YOA-Orchestra of the Americas. David performs regularly with Renegade Ensemble, Struck Percussion Ensemble, the Marimba Bullies, as well as leading his own jazz trio: The Dave Birrow Group.
David holds a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelors degree in Music with a major in Music Education from the University of Miami. His percussion teachers have included Ney Rosauro, Fernando Meza, Earl Yowell, Shannon Wood and Phil Hey. David is the author of The Bucket Book: A Junkyard Guide to Percussion.
