Christina Hans has been teaching music in Virginia since 1997 and has been the Orchestra Director at Hugo A. Owens Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia since 1999. Under her direction the Hugo Owens orchestra program has doubled in size. The Hugo Owens MS orchestra has consistently received “Superior” Ratings at District Festivals and most recently the orchestra had the honor to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association Conference in 2011. Christina was awarded “Music Educator of the Year” by the Bay Youth Orchestra in 2007 and “Teacher of the Year” at Hugo A. Owens Middle School for 2011-2012. In addition to being the Orchestra Director at Hugo Owens she sponsors a Music Department Rock Band and has coached volleyball. Before teaching at Hugo Owens, she taught 5th
grade strings in Norfolk Public Schools for two years traveling between eight elementary schools. Mrs. Hans received her B.A. in Music Education, magna cum laude, from Old Dominion University and her Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Connecticut. Mrs. Hans plays clarinet with the Virginia Wind Symphony and has had the privilege to perform under the direction of many distinguished conductors, including music director and founder Dennis Zeisler, Dr. Frederick Fennell, Dr. Harry Begian, and Col. Arnald Gabriel. She has performed at the MidWest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago and at the Virginia Music Educators Association Conference as a member of the Virginia Wind Symphony. In addition, she has performed with the Faculty Band and Orchestra at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan and with the Tidewater Winds in Norfolk, Virginia. Mrs. Hans resides in Chesapeake, Virginia with her husband, Dr. Steven Hans.
